Our Approach
Based on the Founding Angels concept, we use the following approach to identify and realise interesting startup projects. This approach is quite unusual but reflects the high importance of the personal component within our investment model.
- Step 1: First screening for interesting projects based on publicly available information.
- Step 2: First discussions with the scientists to check expectations and personal chemistry.
- Step 3: More detailed analysis of the selected projects including the first development of a business case.
- Step 4: Completion of the team including the more detailed development of a business case.
- Step 5: Licence negotiations with the owner of existing IP rights.
- Step 6: Incorporation and set-up of the startup company
Our Criteria
Preference will be given to projects with early market proof-of-concept. Projects with a longer time horizon are also possible if the topic is interesting and the potential is high. We do not realise pure research projects without any medium-term commercialisation perspective.
Important, but not mandatory, are existing IP rights, such as patents. If IP rights exist, we negotiate with the owner, usually the university or research institution where the scientists are working. Due to our vast experience, we are very skilled at creating a win-win situation for all parties involved.
The Startup
The entire process of establishing and operating the startup is mainly managed by us. It is not necessary for the scientists to leave their current positions, as there is usually considerable synergy between their academic activities and the activities of the startup.
The financial contribution of the founders is limited to the paid-in capital when establishing the startup company, which is 25,000 Euros in Germany. For example, if a founder owns 10% of the company shares, he or she must pay in 2,500 Euros.
